How to Do a Moroccan Hammam at Home: The 5-Step Ritual
The hammam has been part of daily life in Morocco for centuries. It is a place to slow down, cleanse and take care of your skin. You do not need a marble bathhouse to enjoy the ritual: with a few traditional products and about an hour, you can recreate it in your own bathroom. This guide walks you through the classic 5-step Moroccan hammam ritual.
What You Need
- A warm bathroom (run a hot shower for a few minutes first so the room fills with steam)
- Aker Fassi Powder for a gentle sugar scrub
- Black Soap Beldi
- A Kessa exfoliating glove
- Blue Nila Powder for a hammam-style mask
- Rose Water
- Argan Oil
- A towel, a small bowl, and plenty of warm water
Step 1: Warm Up and Scrub
Start by letting the steam soften your skin for five to ten minutes. Then mix a pinch of Aker Fassi Powder with sugar and a little oil to make a gentle body scrub. Massage it over dry or damp skin before bathing, using soft circular motions, then rinse.
Step 2: Cleanse with Black Soap
Black soap, known as savon beldi, is the heart of the hammam. Apply a generous layer of Black Soap Beldi to warm, damp skin, working from your shoulders down to your feet. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes so it can soften and purify the skin. Avoid contact with your eyes.
Step 3: Exfoliate with the Kessa Glove
This is the step that makes a hammam feel different from a normal shower. Wet the Kessa glove, put it on, and rub your skin in gentle circular motions, working from your feet upward. You will see the dead skin come away. Rinse your skin well, then rinse the glove and let it dry completely. Be gentle on sensitive areas and do not use it on irritated, sunburned or broken skin.
Step 4: Apply a Blue Nila Mask
Mix a little Blue Nila Powder with water or Rose Water into a smooth paste. Apply it to your skin as a mask, leave it for a few minutes, then rinse it off. Blue Nila is a pure Moroccan indigo powder traditionally used in the hammam to brighten and mineralise the skin.
Step 5: Tone and Nourish
Finish the ritual while your skin is still slightly damp. Spray Rose Water over your skin to soothe and rebalance it, then massage in a few drops of Argan Oil to lock in hydration and leave a natural glow.
Tips for the Best Hammam at Home
- Take your time: the hammam is about slowing down. Put your phone away.
- Do it once or twice a month: deep exfoliation does not need to be frequent, especially if your skin is sensitive.
- Drink water afterwards: and rest for a few minutes before you get dressed.
- Do a patch test first: try any new product on a small area of skin before using it more widely.
